  Ecology and the Woodworker

There is nothing like wood.
The beauty of the grain and the various tones and textures all combine to make for a most attractive cabinet and furniture-making medium. It's no wonder that this material has played a starring role in the work of craftsmen for centuries. Today, the ecology minded woodworker realizes the necessity of using wood wisely given the ever-expanding world appetite for this wonderful but finite resource. It is our contention that making products of lasting quality and timeless beauty is the best way to be environmentally responsible.

One type of woodworking we do involves the use of solid wood planks that would otherwise have little value to others in our industry. These have knots, twisted grain and other natural features that can create the most unique and beautiful furniture imaginable. We use even the smallest pieces of this type of wood so that nothing gets wasted.

Other elements of our eco-friendly approach include the use of low overspray finishing processes; composting our wood shavings; and, converting all unusable wood cut-offs into a source of heat for our workshop.

Doing It The Right Way!

We will admit that having a small company does mean we are limited in how much we are able to undertake at any given time. On the other hand, however, it also means we can approach each project with the assurance that every job will get our undivided attention. Although there's always been pressure to expand and increase production, Martini's Woodwork is content to "follow its heart", stay small, and do the best work possible.

Our woodwork involves the use of hand tools and a variety of traditional woodworking machines. Hand planes and saws, chisels, rasps and shaping tools sit side by side with power tools and machinery. This enables us to use the best and most efficient construction methods and procedures possible. It allows us to produce almost anything in wood.

Our construction methods vary according to the form and function of the piece involved. Mortise and tenon joinery, hand cut dovetails, veneering, laminating, steam bending, inlaying, dowelling and even bisquit joinery are all techniques our company will employ as needed.

Using the most effective tools and best construction methods is one part of the equation, using wood that is properly dried is another. For that reason, we have our own lumber drying kiln on site along with an extensive inventory of ready to use wood in a variety of species. This allows us to not only give our customers very nicely matched boards, but insures the wood will have no more than the 6 to 8% moisture content required for fine furniture making.

Finishing is usually accomplished with a spray applied moisture resistant lacquer for excellent protection and good looks. We also offer a hand-rubbed tung oil finish for our solid wood furniture for an even more attractive appearance. Poly-urethane, "bar top" varnish or marine spar varnish can also be specified if needed.

From start to finish, Martini's Woodwork uses the right tools and the right techniques to give our customers the best possible product!
